Immigration has been a long-standing part of America’s history and society, reflecting the core values of the country. At its core, the American Dream is the promise that happiness and prosperity are always there for those who work hard enough. From the busy streets of New York to the sunny and fertile farmlands of California, immigrants arrive with a singular dream: to build a better life for them and their families. However, these immigrants are also careful to preserve their cultural heritage, keeping it afloat in the sea of diversity that is America. This mindset is on display in this section of the text as an individual struggles with a task and keeps working. This produced the result that Ruowei was looking for: a basic understanding of the English language so that classes were coherent. The determination showcased by Ruowei by working to understand a language that was previously incomprehensible to them embodies the American spirit that any barrier can be overcome with effort. In summary, the high school experiences of a teenage Chinese immigrant express the belief that support is always available in America. The experiences of this Chinese teenager additionally provide evidence for the idea that hard work will result in positive change. The idea that assistance is always available from the communities and people around you is reflected in the experiences of an immigrant in second grade. A text that reflects this theme is “With a Little Help From My Friends” by Firoozeh Dumas.…show more content… In addition, the food received by Dumas creates a sense of belonging and support within her community. The gifts and appreciation given by these families show how immigrants are always supported within their communities. Dumas also states, “The last month of our stay, I attended one slumber party after another, all thrown in my honor. This avalanche of kindness did not make our impending departure any easier. Everyone wanted to know when we would come back to America” (Dumas 92). Dumas’ description of being showered with kindness while living in America further reinforces the idea that immigrants are supported within their communities. By including that Dumas had multiple slumber parties thrown in her honor also helps strengthen the idea that immigrants are included in every aspect of their community. To conclude, the principle that immigrants are fully embraced in their communities is found in the real-life experiences of a young Iranian immigrant. All in all, the various narratives of immigrant groups in America emphasize the fundamental values of the nation.
