Mr. Fleagle’s English class taught some important lessons to Russell Baker which have a profound influence in altering the course of his life. When Mr. Fleagle congratulated him for writing an amazing essay, it taught Baker the importance of personal connection and emotional impact of written words which made him realize of his calling-writing. Mr. Fleagle whom he hated as his English teacher later turned his biggest inspiration in discovering his passion for writing. This taught Baker that life can be unexpected and sometimes small incidents leave a major mark.

My school’s students had gathered in the basketball court to witness a friendly basketball match with a team from another school. The joy of a basketball match for a player is to win as it’s for the supporters, and to do so convincingly. Nothing could make you prouder at that moment when your team enter as underdogs and emerge victoriously. Although it was a friendly match, things were turning nastier between the rival audience with every passing minute. The basketball court turned into a battlefield with each player as a warrior, struggling hard for a victory. I could see that everyone on our team that day pressed harder than they ever did, maybe for themselves, but mostly for the rest of us. But unfortunately, the other team won! Everyone was clueless about what happened next. The other team’s members’ minds went crazy when their supporters started chanting slogans in praise of the team for performing extra ordinarily. In over enthusiasm, one of them pushed our teammate badly on the floor and criticized his inferior performance in the match. To my utter surprise, he was smiling. All other things, he was smiling.
