At its peak the Russian empire spread its influence across Eurasia through central Asia and Eastern Europe. To this day the cultures of many central Asian countries have roots of influence to the Russian empire, whether it be good or bad. An example of this can be seen in the historical shift in economy of Central Asia. After Russian influence in the region Central Asia shifted from sophisticated merchant territories (silk road), to remote agricultural territory focused on cotton production. To this day central asia is primarily a remote agricultural based region. It is also important to understand the connection the Russian Empires legacy had on the future formation of the Soviet Union and second world. Many of the territories that were influenced by the Russian empire in turn became future communist puppet states for Moscow and the Soviet Union. The influence and legacy left behind by the Russian empire can be seen across Eurasia to this day. Russia had a slow growing economy that could not sustain the growing population at the turn of the century. Working class people grew poorer and starvation increased. In terms of the military, they lacked supplies and organization that led to many embarrassing losses in the Ruso-Japan war and world war. During World War 1, leadership in Russia failed to maintain stability and the economy and infrastructure crumbled at the expense of its people.
