What makes a worthy president? In the United States, there have been 45 presidents. Being the president of a large country is not an easy job. Each president had a reason for why they were elected no matter if they did a good or bad job in leading the country. To be a worthy president you have to keep the union together, have a vision of what to do best for the country and lead 323.1 million people. Among all of those presidents, Rutherford B. Hayes was the nineteenth president and was born on October 4, 1882, in Delaware, Ohio. He went to Kenyon College, Thomas Sparrow, and Harvard Law School. After, Rutherford took part of the civil war in 50 engagements and ran as a governor in Ohio. The United States was going through a rough time after the Civil War. The South was the most damaged and needed to be rebuilt since their land was demolished, their economy wasn’t good and their political institutions were invaded. In addition, after the war, the people were confused on what to do. So in the Compromise of 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes was elected president with 20 electoral votes. In return for the Democrats, the Republicans agreed to remove the troops from the South. This ended the Reconstruction Era.
