Academics were very important to his and his parents pushed him to do well. He did not talk much about how this has shaped him as a person and says that he wished he had learned more than just the small town he was exposed to. When it came to Amber she was surrounded by a community that placed value on education. This community also was very independent which is a quality she says she learned very young. His community did not place a high value on education and saw that the only way to be out of the situation you were in was sports or hustling. Through his community he gained his identity of a leader which largely shaped his future as an educator.
