On June 12, 2016 Omar Mateen a 29 year male entered club Pulse a gay nightclub and murdered 49 people and severely injured over 50 people other individuals in a terrorist/hate crime. According to (Lotan, Minshew, Lafferty and Gibson, 2017, para.1). Adam Gruler an off duty Orlando police officer was the first emergency personnel at the scene. Both Mateen and the officer exchanged gunfire near the entrance of the club, once the officer Gruler realized he was out gunned he then proceeded to retreat back to his vehicle and radioed for backup. The threat assessment on this event is high, because the off duty officer exchanged gun fire with the suspect, Mateen then retreated into the nightclub for cover. The responding officers must initiate special operation units (SWAT), Crisis/Hostage negotiation units, and medical officials. Swat units are designed to operate under stressful …show more content…
When special operation units are not deployed into crisis situations they are continuously training and planning around the clock for any type of scenario. Special operation units are continuously thinking and planning different scenarios that are unimaginable and imaginable. In the article it states that “SWAT situations are dangerous as indicated by the practice of having medical personnel readily available” (Lopez, 2013, p.2). It also states that “SWAT units, however, readiness to use deadly force is their stock-in-trade as evidenced by their gear, weapons, and tactics” (Lopez, 2013, p.2). During the event if SWAT units were deployed first instead of patrol units. Law enforcement officer would have being able to save more lives.
