Have you ever felt afraid to stand up to someone? Well, in Stand Tall by Joan Bauer, Sophie Santack isn’t afraid at all. Even though she’s had some tough times, Sophie is always encouraging, brave, and humorous even in the toughest of situations.
Sophie is very encouraging and gives great advice. “Stand tall,’ Sophie told him (Tree). ‘Wear it proud” (122). Sophie says this when Tree bends down to her height because he feels too tall for her while they’re dancing. In addition, Sophie says, ‘‘You’ve got to laugh. If you don’t, you’ll cry” (78). When Sophie makes a joke and Tree doesn’t laugh, she gives him some encouragement.
