Personally, I consider the sacrifice of Melba and the rest of the nine students who attended Central High School a significant progress of people pursuing equality in U.S history because it marked the point when Negroes dared to stand out and act against the segregation based on races and colors, moreover it had a positive influence on people who valued the idea of equality and integration at that time to further stride on the way to achieve it. First of all, think about Melba and the other eight students, the fight between the white students along with the irresponsible and indifferent officers and them helped these students to build up strong minds and skills that would not merely contribute them to survive from recent situation but also conquer future challenges. After enduring hurtful words and physical torment, Melba told her grandma that “I wish I were dead.” and “God, please let me be dead until the end of the year,” (Chapter 22), she expected her grandma to be alarmed after hearing such depressed thing, however she just calmly accepted it. Grandma taught her that her death would be spotted by segregationists and it would make them ecstatic because they thought they’ve won, Melba finally realized that dying was not a wise idea during this extraordinary period and it was “silly for wanting give up.” (Chapter 22).
