Everyone has that place where they run to when they need to escape the walking disaster that is life, a safe harbor. Garrison Keillor, an American author and radio personality, has defined this as a place where even the knowledge that it is there soothes you when the load seems too heavy. A safe harbor welcomes you with open arms to allow you to repair your vessel. Personally, my safe harbor is my car.
My car is nothing special. It is a grey Ford Fiesta, and for people who don’t speak fluent car language, it is a small zippy little car. Despite its size, it is the ideal safe harbor. I automatically turn to my car if I want to go anywhere. From the second I started driving, it has held my entire life. I am not the most neat person. Arguments between friends, difficult teachers, and the disasters of highschool dating, can be a lot to deal with all at one time. It is almost unheard of to find a quiet place to let your thoughts take over. This is why my safe harbor is perfect. My car is a bubble between me and the commotions outside. And while music therapy is impactful, driving in silence is a different kind of therapy. It gives your hands something to do while your mind wanders. With all the media and the constant disturbance of phones, I never get the chance to think for myself. In my safe harbor, I can block out the world long enough to have an original thought. The locks on the doors allow me to close off everyone else, and open back up when the time is right. This happens after I fall apart, and put myself back together.
