Mass hysteria, a rapid spread of panic and fear, can happen anywhere at any time. Unfortunately, it happened in Massachusetts during the early 1690’s, beginning the Salem witch trials. During this time it feels important to discuss everyone's role that played a part in creating the hysteria in their town. Even the people that didn’t want to be a part of the drama were pulled into by the malicious intent of their neighbors. The main reason for the mass hysteria that could not be stopped was because the people in the town were just not thinking with morals. Blaming their neighbors for heinous crimes, falsely accusing others for their own benefit. The way the community in Salem, Massachusetts has their laws made and controlled by the church indicates how biased it may be. “We vote by name in this society, not by acreage.” (252) That if any higher up decide to be blindsided could destroy the town. Danforth and Hathorne being the main judges over the witch trials could have stopped it if they truly tried or wanted to. Nonetheless, it still was a town ruled by the church. Having a theocratic government such as Salem proves how important it is to keep the separation of the church and state. Whos to say the judges in the crucible were not under witchcraft themselves? Why do you never wonder if Parris is innocent, or Abigail? Is the accuser always holy now?” (453) If they were to take into others opinions they would understand how many of the accusations were wild and unjust.
