I believe Sam Spade is a man driven by his own desires, from what we can tell as the readers the only things he wants out of life are sex and money. We can see towards the end where he's willing to sellout Brigid as the fall-guy. While other characters are driven by love Sam Spade is a selfish individual who works for his own personal gain, just like Gutman and Cairo. Other characters in the book such as Effie, Iva and Wilmer are doing this out of love but it seems that Sam Spade can’t decide who he does and does not love.

I think that Sam Spade is a pig, while he may be a pig he's also a very smart one. Its that he wants to love, even though he is in it for the money he loved Wilmer and Wilmer mattered to him, until he held down Wilmer and Sam Spade punched him of course but in the book we see no indication of Gutman loving someone or Sam Spade loving someone either full time.

Though they do like the money they are in it for Sam Spade and Cairo 100%.

Overall I find that Sam Spade is a smart but heartless pig, in it for the money just like Gutman but unlike Cairo, Wilmer, Effie and Iva he makes love with them then leaves them. Sam Spade’s behaviors can only be confirmed in the end as greedy as he sells out Brigid as a fall-guy and takes off as the winning superhero at the
