Introduction
The purpose of this essay is to convey three theories and/or concepts of interpersonal communication through the eyes a stereotypical suburban family in the show titled “ Parenthood.” The episode that is used in this research is directed from Season 1, Episode 5; as each concept and/or theory is identified a scene from the episode will serve as an example. The three concepts that will be discussed are as follows; Family communication Theory (with an emphasis on sibling communication,) Gender Roles, and the Approachment vs Avoidance of Conflict.
Concept 1
Definition: Family communication Theory, with an emphasis on sibling communication.
There are three stages to Sibling Relationships that range from childhood, to adulthood.

After moving back in with her parents with two kids and an absent father, Sarah stays positive. She keeps a strong head and mind when dealing with her two troubled teens, so when it becomes apparent that her daughter stole Sarah’s high school paper and used it as her own, she quickly dealt with the problem. Sarah marched up to her daughters room, woke her up and confronted her. As Sarah confronted her daughter, she gave her chance to speak as to why she committed plagiarism, and then made her ruling to speak to her teacher.
Application:
The personality of Sarah Braverman is extroverted and highly talkative; sarah’s occupation is bartending which requires high emotional intelligence an insight. These traits lineup with those of someone who approaches conflict, as displayed when she quickly spoke to her daughter about her school work. Sarah also gave her child a chance to defend herself when she approached her, after letting her speak she handled the conflict in a calm matter.
Conclusion:
In season one, episode five of “Parenthood,” three interpersonal communication functions that were displayed are Family communication Theory (with an emphasis on sibling communication,) Gender Roles, and Approachment vs Avoidance of Conflict.
