Final Draft HERE Sometimes in a world filled with promises, a gesture can echo louder than a million words. Words are used when it comes to communication. They can deliver a clear understanding and clarification when it comes to arguments. On the other hand, actions can be more important when it comes to showing sincerity, and, can help when words aren’t enough. Throughout this unit, several texts supported this, such as, “Broadway Princess” and, “Why is Sarcasm so Difficult to Detect in Text and Emails?” Nonetheless, actions can be more impactful. They can transmit a deeper meaning and mean more to a person. A text that shows how actions speak louder than words is “Broadway Princess.” This text is a narrative about the famous Denee Benton,…show more content… She continues to inspire young girls to follow their dreams. The author explains to the reader how from a young age she knew what she wanted to do with her life, and with support from her family she was able to achieve it. By going to summer camps, and putting herself out there. Proving that hard work pays off. The text shows this when it states, “Teachers told Benton about singing and acting competitions, while her mom Jackie entered her into the NAACP’s ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) program. Described as an Olympics of the mind, ACT-SO offers classes and scholarship competitions.” This demonstrates Benton’s determination as she fought for what she wanted and, pursued her goals through involvement in competitions which further pushed her. She utilized actions to accomplish her goals. People often say they want to achieve something, but, never do anything to achieve it. Benton is an example when it comes to taking action. Her relentless persistence allowed her to achieve her goals. A quote from the text that demonstrates this is, “When delivered in person, sarcasm tends to assume a cutting, bitter tone. But written messages don’t always get that attitude across or give you much else to go on.” This shows that when sending a text it can be very vague without something to follow up on. Confusing readers on whether sarcasm is being used. The author explains that as technology evolves, so do the tools people have to communicate. Texting is a big one, but, sometimes it can throw people off as there is no tone or gestures that come with it. Except for emojis, emojis could be considered the actions of texts as they help people understand what someone is trying to indicate through small actions.
