The theme of “The Sniper” is that the war reduces human beings to mere objects. The soldiers see the people they are shooting as targets. The themes of these two stories are similar because both the sniper in the story and the brother get reduced to less than human, which results in both of them accidentally killing their brothers. The sniper in the story was trained to see the enemy as targets not humans. This results in him fighting against his brother and shooting him before he realizes that he was his brother.
