Interviewer: Good morning, Boston. Today I am here with the former social pariah, Hester Prynne. Today on this episode of Five Minutes with Kailian, I am interviewing Hester after the tragic loss of her forbidden lover. We are also going to discuss young Pearl and her generous inheritance from none other than Roger Chillingworth. Interviewer: So, how are you, Hester? It has been quite a while since we have seen you around town. The last time was when you had just lost your lover, and Pearl was just seven. Hester: Good morning, Mrs. Kailian. I am well, if I do say so myself. I enjoyed the solitude back at my little cottage. Away from my Pearl, she is my heart, yet all mothers can agree you need a little peace. She had never felt that much towards anyone, not even me. She sobbed and kissed him. Before that, we had been alone, just the three of us, and she had barely let him near her. After that, Pearl became less closed off and more open to people. She was an elvish child, always a little rougher than the others. So I think this was a positive shift in her personality. As I mentioned earlier, the only people she allowed near her were her father and me, and all others were the butts of her anger. Interviewer: How did you react when you found out your husband, not Pearl’s father, left his inheritance to her? Do you feel jealous or confused? How did Peal react to the money? Was she shocked, or did she not grasp the severity of it? Why do you think it was left to Pearl? Hester: I was shocked and confused when it was first made known that she had inherited it. At that point in his life, I had long since held nothing but hatred toward him. And I thought that’s what he felt toward me, and likewise, Pearl.
