The Chinese School of Greater Detroit was the largest Chinese School in Michigan. It located at the campus of the Cranbrook Institute of Science, Bloomfield Hills. There were five classes on every Saturday with about 50 students. Our daughter, Virginia, went to this school. In the 1980s, the school started in financial trouble to sustain the operation. To deal with the deficit problem, the school forced to increase the tuition. After two years of continuous increasing tuition, the problem became worse since the number of students continuously declined resulted in even less school income. The school managed by a school board chaired by a chairman elected by the board members. The class program managed by an appointed principle by the board. They all were volunteers. In June 1984, I was elected as the Chairman of the new board to face the challenge of the school finance problem. We also extended our rent for the school to include the Gym so parents could come to the school to play basketball and do other excises. For older students, we added a special advanced class for them focusing on understanding Chinese culture and basic Chinese conversation. At the end of each school year in June, we would have a big end of school show program performed by students and parents. On top of that, we asked parents to donate subjects for school fund-raising auctions at the night event. We did collect quite bit supplemented money for the school.
