Recently, the school district changed the lockdown drill. Schools old lockdown drill was locking the doors, hiding behind chairs and scutching to one wall to avoid all windows. This wasn’t an efficient system because everyone knows the drill and why would a school be empty in the middle of the day on a weekday. Not to mention, a lot of shootings are now caused by students inside the school. This might sound cliche but during a real shooting you need to either run, hide and attack. Run away as fast and far as you can, don’t stop for any of your belongings. Don’t purposely go out of your way to look for your friends, but do grab some other students to help each other reach the nearest exit. Hiding is a also a another route to go. If you can fit yourself in a locker or just hide behind a shelf would be better than nothing. In a worse case scenario you can always attack, find a desk to throw at them, scissors to stab them, hot coffee to burn them, anything can be used as a weapon. “If it comes to that, "you have to fight for your life," Bruner said. A text systems would help alert college campuses, businesses and maybe even high schools. “IN the aftermath of the shooting, many schools scrambled to devise systems that would allow them to issue campus-wide text messages in the event of an emergency” (Prevent a Tragedy, Campuswide Text System). It would be a great way to protect the lives of people because almost everyone has access to their phones. Schools should start having a better security system. Students should have to keep all book bags and purses in their lockers during school hours. When they walk through the school doors there should be metal detectors or someone to check through their things or during class security should go through their lockers. It's not an invasion of privacy because to be honest, the only thing in your lockers should be your books. In case of an emergency some teachers should be armed. There weapon should be locked up and never used unless of an absolute emergency. I know how risky that sounds but it's a risk everyone should be willing to take. These things are the next steps to preventing more
