Small beads of precipitation began to cover my forehead lightly as my heartbeat increased dramatically. I felt more than a dozen pairs of eyes on me as I looked around me new school, people wondering who I was and why I was there. Everyone was in identical clothing, khakis, maroon, white, grey, or black polos. I looked around confused, feeling as if everyone had been morphed together. I didn’t know what to think, my thoughts flooded my mind as I tried to wrap my head around the school uniform. Why did everyone look the same? What happened to individuality and diversity? Students need to experiment with the image they want to give to the public, showing their individuality and their differences and learning to accept it. Uniforms are not allowing students to do that, they are stifling with the creativity of students at such a young age. When they’re finally able to wear what they want, whether that’s in a work environment or just going out with their friends, they won’t be shy about what they wear and how they present themselves. LGBT students have also had a problem with uniforms seeing as they have certain clothes for each gender. Has the bullying stopped? Has any of it really stopped because of uniforms? Teens will always find something to judge, whether it’s your height, weight, hair color or style, there is always something to judge. Aside from that they aren’t saving families any money, on top of buying uniforms they still have to buy normal street clothing for the weekend or during vacations. Maybe kids aren’t forcing to buy them name brand clothing, but it is still a cost that they wouldn’t have had to worry about before. One question remains unanswered after years of debate, what is the point?
