In the 1960s, George Wallace once said, “In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.". The 1960s were more open to the idea of equality in the legal system in churches and schools. But in the 1930s, they were so opposed to that idea that they would kill an innocent man based on his skin. The Scosburo 9 case is a good example. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, there is the tale of Tom Roberson. It is an unfair case based on someone's skin color. In the Scotsburo boy, there are problems with how people don't care about the evidence but the color of their skin. The quote that proves this to me is “The defense seemed inaugural”. And yet, after only a few minutes of deliberation, the jury pronounced Patterson guilty and recommended execution.” (mcbirney 3). This is a way to show how there was a proof that they did not do it, but the jury was set on the death penalty. Now in the book, there is a similar problem, and the jury did a similar thing. This is shown by "I don’t see how any jury could convict based on what we heard.” “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem; I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man" (lee 212). This is talking about how they would not rule in Tom's robes because of his skin. There is a problem with the way they treat him in jail. This is shown by the amount they shot him with: “They got him just as he went over the fence. They said if he’d had two good arms, he’d have made it; he was moving that fast. He has seventeen bullet holes in him. They didn’t have to shoot him that much.” (Lee 239). The excessive use of force against Tom shows the racial prejudice and injustice in the legal system. the brutal treatment helps to prove the deep-rooted racism within the country at that …show more content…
This is shown in the housing market with “racial inequality in housing cost burden, that is, spending 30% or more of household income on housing costs.” Hess, C., Colburn, G., Crowder, K., & Allen, R. (2022). Racial disparity in exposure to housing cost burden in the United States: 1980–2017. Housing Studies, 37(10), 1821–1841. https://doi.org/10.1080/02673037.2020.1807473). This helps to show how it costs even more for nothing but skin color. Then there is the economic gap. The gap has been growing. “Ethnic inequality shows that progress in narrowing the gap between minorities and whites and among white ethnic groups was made when the economy was expanding.” This is proven to show that there is a gap that is growing. This gap in economy shows how there is a need for change to address racial differences in housing costs and financial stability. Without action the gap is likely to continue
