SCPO Jusko Leadership Philosophy
Leadership is difficult. It is difficult to define. It is difficult to employ. For those in positions of leadership, it can be an impossible challenge given extreme circumstances. Not one single element of leadership can be disregarded or treated with disdain as our emerging workforce is being challenged with the sweeping changes of modernization. Leadership definitions vary in content and complexity, but most agree that the end result is achievement. Leadership must be defined in a holistic approach if the road to achievement yields growth and effectiveness in our workforce, therefore I define leadership as, “Guiding effort to overcome challenges, develop personal growth, and increase organizational health”. Leadership is meant to be fluid and applicable in every situation with no end, which is why I do not agree that it should be defined with an end state in mind. Early in my career, Leaders often used terms such as situational leadership and intrusive leadership, which are great functional applications of leadership practices, but they do not capture the true intent of a leader.

Clearly communicating and applying my personal leadership values will be made evident by setting a personal example of what I expect from others. When I return to ATTC, I will qualify as an instructor and begin teaching the Apprentice Leadership Program. This will demonstrate to my staff that I am invested in the process of developing junior members and when dealing with instructional design issues, I am speaking from recent personal experience. This will also allow me to seek direct feedback from peers and subordinates and begin to develop the rapport needed to build
