In Adam Shepard’s novel Scratch Beginnings, Adam Shepard develops himself as a very humble character. He starts at the bottom expecting himself to work hard and make his way to the top. He starts from scratch and has nothing with him except a sleeping bag, an empty gym bag, $25 and the clothes on his back. When Adam takes the train to Charleston, he is ready for what the open world has to offer him. He says, “My first order was to find a comfortable place to sleep. Shoot, it didn’t even have to be a comfortable place to sleep— just a place, a relatively safe place.”(2). He’s implying that he would be content with wherever he had to go as long as it was safe and out of harms way. In the book he doesn’t once complain about how he has no choice
