In 1981 the Zoo Licensing Act was put into place for all United Kingdom zoos. This act was put in place to ensure that animals in zoos are provided with a natural environment, these zoos were searched by a process of inspection and licensing of all zoos in the United Kingdom. The Act has been updated several times through its lifespan, but the main laws have not changed. Under the Zoo Licensing Act, a zoo is defined as a place where wild animals are kept for exhibition to which members of the public have access to.
