Seaworld's Blackfish: A Brief Analysis

Although SeaWorld is a great place for families to spend time together, my documentary, “Blackfish” argues that the consequences of putting orcas into captivity outweigh the entertainment people may be getting. Orcas are subject to extremely undesirable treatment and often live terrible lives in captivity. Mistreated orcas may lash out at their trainers, which will cause terror not only for the trainer, but the audience as well. This documentary causes the audience to take their side, by appealing to the reader through countless personal testimonies and horrifying details of the lives of captive orcas. Orcas at SeaWorld are mistreatment and will sometimes act aggressively toward their trainers, because of their wretched lives, not innate violence. When an orca at SeaWorld attacks its trainer, SeaWorld often tries to blame it on the trainer rather than the orca, because SeaWorld wants to continue to profit off the animal. Dawn Brancheau, a senior trainer at SeaWorld, was a fatal victim of an orca attack. She was blamed for her death, despite her experience with the whales and her dedication to her work(7:08-7:46). The filmmaker, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, created this film because of the questions she had in 2010 regarding the death of Dawn Brancheau. The leaders at SeaWorld are portrayed as liars, who will do anything to their orcas just to make money. This is because they withheld information about the attacks from the public as well as their trainers. Cowperthwaite had these facts stated because they only touch on the bad side of the leaders.
