Second Semester Concert Critique

On a Saturday evening on March 10, I attended a choir concert New Music For Treble Voices at Trianon Theatre. The performers consisted of an all-female cast from different backgrounds and ages. The groups that performed at the concert included the Peninsula Women’s Chorus, Ancora, iSing Silicon Valley, and Musae.

The concert began with a performance from the Peninsula Women’s Chorus. The group performed a beautiful rendition of Moon Goddess and From ‘displacement’+ that explore the ongoing process of displacement in the Bay Area. The number Movement V: San Francisco from the rendition of ‘displacement’+ was eerie. I enjoyed the haunting melody and the dark lyrics that describe the composer’s lament for San Francisco. I was given a pamphlet during the concert that held additional information on PWC. According to the pamphlet, the PWC was established in 1966 and is notable for its adventuresome programming. The choir group sang a total of three songs: I Sat Down Under His Shadow, It Sounded As If The Streets Were Running, and Zwei Better. Even though the group composed of members that are young, I was highly impressed by their professionalism and energy. The harmonization was outstanding; I felt engaged the whole time I was watching the performance.

iSing Silicon Valley performed next after Ancora. The choir team was founded in 2013 and its main purpose is to unite 300 girls from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds through choir. The members of the group cost of adolescents and young adults. They performed a medieval Latin piece Vivos Voco and a modern piece called Spark! To Music. They also sang a song from Magnificat called Et misericordia. The performance they put was engaging and entertaining. I loved the positive energy the members give
