Poole had known about the Jekyll and Hyde situation, to some extent and she had hidden it from others which had ultimately lead to the demise of Dr. Jekyll because from her hiding the secret didn’t allow others to help him. Even early in the story, Poole had hidden the secret from everyone, “O dear no, sir. He never dines here… Indeed, we see very little of him on this side of the house; he mostly comes and goes by the laboratory” (11). Poole had known that Jekyll and Hyde were the same people and she hid that from everyone, which caused the death of Carew and Dr. Jekyll because no one was able to help Jekyll because Poole kept the secret of them being the same person. Poole had finally –at the end of the story when it was too late—stopped lying and told the truth about Dr. Jekyll and what she had known. When Dr. Jekyll was in the room “with” Hyde and he locked the door she had finally said that Hyde was Jekyll, but indirectly, “I’m book-learned enough for that; but a man has his feelings; and I give you my bible-word it was Mr. Hyde” (32). When Poole had finally confessed that he/she had actually met Mr. Hyde and he/she confessed which had caused them to break down the door, which symbolizes the breaking down of a door that Mr. Jekyll was hiding behind and the breaking of order that the Victorian Era held, because Poole had hidden this so long and it causes Jekyll to die in the
