She did not have anyone that was going through the same thing that she was going through and no one would come over because they were scared to break Mike. Mike eventually began to thrive. Not like other children, but in his own ways. He was able to sit up and he was very intelligent. His mind was sharp yet his body could not keep up. When Mike was four his mother was introduced to a doctor named Dr. Sofeild that could do what is called a rodding procedure that could help Mike have strength in his legs to walk. Mike had to procedure done, but was only able to walk for a short time and ultimately ended up in a wheel chair permanently. As Mike got older he was told that he could not go to school and that a teacher could come to his house. They found a great teacher named Mrs. Williams that was able to teach Mike and did not feel sorry for him, but knew he had a sharp mind and could learn. This teacher really helped Gemma not be so lonely anymore. She had someone to talk to and could see that Mike was learning. Mike teacher was with him three years until she transferred after that he did not see many teachers. Gemma had an urge to help other people so she wrote her story to popular magazine Red Book.
