The sei whale was listed in the Endangered Species Act in July 06, 1970 as an endangered species wherever found; believed to be in California and Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the sei whale is one of the least studied from all the commercially exploited “great whales” thus the current statuses of most sei whales stocks are unknown. The sei whale’s phylogenetic identity: Animalia kingdom, Chordata phylum, Mammalia class, Cetacea or Cetartiodactyla order, Balaenopteridae family, Balaenoptera order and Balaenoptera borealis species. The closest living relative for the sei whale would be the Bryde’s and Omura’s whales. Sei whales can reach the lengths of about 40-60 feet and weigh 100,000 pounds. Males are slightly shorter than the females. They are usually seen in alone or in a small group of 2-5 whales and on occasions can be seen in a larger group of 30-50 whales. …show more content…
During the summer, they are seen in the Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank and Stellwagen Bank in the western North Atlantic. Sei whales’ movements and distribution pattern is not well known because they could occur randomly in a specific area but there movements are unpredictable; which is believe that sei whales are seasonal migrate to higher latitudes during summer and lower latitudes during the winter. Subtropical to subpolar waters on continental shelf edge and slope worldwide are preferred by the sei whales. They are also seen in the deeper waters of the oceanic areas far from the coastline. Their feeding behavior is whatever is in the abundance locally; it can be a schooling of small fish, plankton or squid.
