Queen of tejano music, Selena Quintanilla was a star to lots of people in the late 80’s to 90’s. After her murder at such a young age her journey ended sooner than expected, but she has continued to live on in her music, fashion and memorials like her bronze monument in Texas. Some view this monument as a waste of space and think the space should be filled with a wider range of local history. Disregard what those kinds of people think of Selena's monument, it deserves to stay up, it celebrates her life and legacy, her impact was beyond music as she actively gave back to the community, and it represents and inspires aspiring musicians especially from underrepresented communities. Christine Musser stated, “...the supporters of the museum felt that building a museum on the mall would enhance the mall’s already diverse stories” (Source E). When people gather at Selena’s monument, it’s mainly about her, but it’s also about tejano music as a Mexican American. Although others could come to an agreement that Selena’s monument wasn’t “diverse” enough, they have failed to realize that it doesn’t really matter how diverse it was, it was still diverse. This is kind of similar to the crazy horse monument as stated by Lawrence Downes “... by this effort to honor the memory of a people this country once tried to erase”(Source C). Society wants to focus on effort put in to get their honor, but all that doesn’t really matter. As Selena actively gave back to the community, so did many others and they also have monuments. For example, the Little Rock Nine (Source B). When Selena was around she gave back through charity work and educational outreach, especially for unprivileged children.
