In 2010, there were estimated 5,419,000 crashes. At such number around 32,999 people were killed and around 35% were injured. That's just in the United States alone. Road accidents are inevitable, regardless if the driver is a careful driver. These road accidents are usually human errors, some drive drunk, most fell asleep and others just aren't that careful when they drive. Which leads us to the question: If we use self-driving cars, will the road be safer?

Google Self-Driving Car is a project led by Google involving technology for autonomous cars. Usually developed in electric cars, these cars are now being tested in the roads of the United States and have been very successful at that.
This means, that in the near future, we can call our cars to get us from that rave party you've been to or order them to drive you 20 miles east while you're sleeping on the driver's seat.
Safety
Since the self-driving cars are made to run based on protocols, it is expected to be safer. Car's won't decide whether to hit the red light or not; , they won't drive 200 miles per hour on a high way, nor won't get drunk. These things that people do all the time are what causes common fatal road accidents - and self-driving cars are there to prevent it.
