Progression: Self-Reflective Narrative During the first semester of my senior year of high school, my counselor and I were discussing college. She brought up taking a college-credit English class, specifically about writing essays. I was worried, having never taken an academic college class before, but I knew it would prove beneficial in the future. Despite my worries, I agreed to take the class with the goal for the semester: to achieve a B or higher. However, achieving this goal was going to be difficult with my current skill set. Now, in the present day, with the help of my newly earned skills, I achieved a grade that scored way more than I expected. These skills not only helped me achieve the grade I wanted, but will also aid me in the future with college and careers. In my final semester of high school in English 111 I learned lifelong useful skills such as rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading, and writing, knowledge of the composition process, collaboration, knowledge of conventions, and composing in electronic environments. Rhetorical Knowledge Rhetorical knowledge is a skill I have developed and grown to appreciate. At the start of English 111, I learned we would be using an APA format which I was not familiar with. I was unsure about the intricacies of the first page and section titles, which led me to researching how to properly format them. To make matters worse, I missed the day of school where we learned about it and created an outline to use the entire semester. Thus I was left to scour the internet to make one myself. Similarly, I developed a writing style that maintains professionalism whilst containing my argument. I had never used these skills before, but now that I have, I can never go back. English 111 taught me the importance of responding to the needs of your intended audience with a clear purpose and stance while maintaining formality, and I will continue to use this skill in the future. Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing Critical thinking, reading, and writing were all skills I knew were important in English class, however I never improved on them any more than my baseline skills until strengthening them in this class. In my Arguing a Position essay, I needed to analyze the opposing argument and address it in my essay. Critical thinking was extremely important here and allowed me to poke holes in the opposing side’s argument. After gathering my thoughts, I needed to put them into writing to properly convey my argument. I created my body paragraphs explaining multiple reasons for my argument, even including a
