Ever since I was a kid, my parents have always told me that “Knowledge does not only come from books but also from experience of the world”. As a result, in the past twenty years of my adventurous life, I’ve not only explored ten countries, but also decided to move to America when I was sixteen. I took every opportunity that I could get to go out there, to embrace nature, to learn from different cultures, and to experience the world. I believe that every culture, every country, every race has their own kind of beauty. However, compared to the “Semester at Sea” project that I’ve recently heard from the news, my stories are not worth telling at all when compared to the most unique floating campus in the world. This program is administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE), a nonprofit group that is based in Fort Collin. The staff in this program is absolutely dedicated to global education with highly responsive, passionate and driven attitudes, and they intended to educate individuals about the necessity of the global understanding and challenges of our interdependent world. “Go to class while sailing the sea, watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean or stare up at the Mediterranean stars.” To me, the Semester at Sea program is a way to make my dream come true, the dream that I’ve always wanted since I was a kid, to travel while studying, to not only just sit in front of a desk and look at images on the book, but also go out there to see through the world through my own eyes. More than 55,000 individuals from 1,700 institutions have attended the Semester at Sea program and have traveled to more than 60 countries.
