The Seneca Nation of Indians is a federally recognized tribe who resides in various territories in Western New York. There are four territories that belong to the tribe: the Allegany Territory, the Cattaraugus Territory, the Oil Spring Territory, and the Central and Western New York Territory. As stated on their official tribal website https://sni.org/, the Seneca Nation was one of the original six tribes that made up the Iroquois Confederacy. The nation was also the largest of the six. Their constitution was established in 1848, creating a system of government with multiple branches and elections every two years. However, only half that number actually reside in the tribe’s territories. The nation also has its own native language that is considered “at-risk.” However, the Seneca people have made it a mission to teach and preserve the language. In its own dialect, the tribe is known as On-non-dowa-gah which translates to “Great Hill People.” Another nickname given to the Seneca is the “Keeper of the Western Door,” which stems from them being the western most tribe out of the Six Nations. This label is showcased throughout the entire website, specifically at the top of every page. Considering this and other details of the website, the Seneca Nation’s identity is showcased and celebrated throughout its online presence. The Seneca Nation of Indians’ website is up-to-date and very user-friendly, whether the user is a part of the nation or not. Upon entering the website, there is an immediate showcase of the Seneca flag and its language. Paired with every English heading is its Seneca language translation. Directly under the “Welcome to the Seneca Nation” is a feature about culture.
