There are many different American Indian tribes in America, but one in particular is so many amazing ways of living, an amazing language, and so much more. This tribe is named after the Seneca tribe. In the beginning years, the Seneca tribe, pronounced Seh-neh-kah, settled in New York. The tribe named themselves Onandowaga, meaning "people of the mountain" in their language. The Seneca language is “an Iroquoian language of the Northeast Woodlands” (Orrin and Redish “Seneca”). Their diet consisted of corn, beans, and squash, as well as hunting and fishing for important proteins. One responsibility for the tribe would be fishing, but not on land. Senecas also needed clothes, so the men used “breechcloths with leggings” (Orrin and Redish “Facts”). Women used a different type of clothing; Seneca women wore wraparound skirts with shorter leggings. Orrin and Redish “Facts”. Senecas also “Wore moccasins on their feet” (Orrin and Redish “Facts”). During the central period, many Seneca kids liked to join their fathers in hunting and fishing. Seneca children also had corn husk dolls, toys, and games. One example of a Seneca game is where “kids try to throw a dart through a moving hoop” (Orrin and Redish “Facts”). Amidst the trouble of being pushed out of the tribe’s homeland, the Seneca tribe demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience, refusing to let go of their heritage and united identity. Nowadays, the Seneca tribe has made significant changes while trying to maintain their authentic cultural heritage. Many Seneca people have established new communities and adjusted to change to different environments.
