Serena Williams is one of the most dominant female athletes to ever compete in sports. She has heart, emotion and power when she plays. Because Williams is arguably the best tennis player to ever compete, donates to charity, and opened doors for black youth by providing representation in tennis she deserves to be honored during black history month.
To get the ball rolling, Williams is an amazing athlete that has amassed many championships, fans and wins, through her amazing tennis play using these achievements she also donates to charity and gives back. In an article by the Washington Post “According to USTA survey data for 2005, 87 percent of players nationwide were white, 10 percent were black and 2 percent were Asian. Thirteen percent identified themselves as Hispanic. More than 40 percent of players had household incomes above $75,000. One-third lived in suburbs.” Tennis is a majority white, underclass sport and it could be hard for a black person to feel represented in the sport. Serena Williams represents a lot of people that want to compete in a white sport and succeed. Williams is an example of possibility and success in tennis for black people. Serena Williams also advocates for black people in tennis and encourages a diverse sport. When talking about the highest paid athlete list she tried to convey that she is thankful for her spot and positive so the next black athlete can be number one. Williams wants to open doors and support black athletes that are striving to be the best like her. Representation in sports is very important especially when the person you look up to aids and wants your success. Serena Williams provides important representation, and assistance to young black people that aspire to be as admiral as Serena
