Service Learning Project: My Experience With Homelessness

For our service learning project, we went out to feed the homeless. We went to McDonald's and got a lot of mcchickens and french fries. We also went to Food 4 Less to get chips and water bottles. So we went around the San Fernando valley to find homeless people. The main places we found homeless people were in parks, parking lots, or underneath bridges. That day was very hot and I could not imagine how bad they felt. It was not a good day to be outside with any shade. The homeless people were really nice and friendly. They seemed like they wanted to talk to someone because they really don't have anyone to have a complete conversation. One guy said he has trust issues and did not want to accept the food. I do understand where he is coming from. This other guy was disrespectful by cussing us out and saying he did not want any food because he wanted a cigarette or drugs. It was sad a little seeing the homeless people in that heat with hardly any shade. Through out this experience I learned a lot of lessons. I learned to never take anything for granted and live life to the fullest. I see that people are not always going to have help by family or friends so at the end of the day people got to be responsible for themselves. This experience sort of scared me because some of the homeless people are homeless for no reason, they did not do anything bad, but they were just unlucky. This experienced also made me wonder why their family's or friends did not support or help them. Never rely on anyone because they have responsibilities to worry about also. When we went on and on to find the homeless, we started to see kids that were homeless. That is depressing to see kids that were forced to grow up in that lifestyle. I had fun helping the community.
