I interestingly chose Seth Maddox, who isn’t the main character of this novel, however, stands out to me due to his unannounced personal issues and struggles he’s faced throughout his harsh life. Seth, the elder of the twins, stood out to me the most as a character since his personal issues and struggles were always cloaked underneath a tough exterior he was raised to possess. Seth did not grow up like most kids, he was brutally treated by his father to become a strong leader and resilient man. Even though this worked fittingly, Seth grew up with the constant, nagging thought of never being good enough or living up to his father’s extreme expectations. This caused Seth to build an inner struggle to always be the best, yet, never be able to please his father. However, this also displays Seth’s vast character development, since in his moment of vulnerability while suffering from a gushing stab wound and discovering the intricate secrets of his family, he finally allows his emotions to come to the surface and present themselves. Seth also becomes more compassionate towards others, including Droughtlanders whom he’d seen as filthy animals all his life, and has become more understanding of the lives the Droughtlanders live, which aren’t as revolting as he once thought. This proves the author’s quite effective character development, considering how in the beginning of the novel Seth had not even shed a tear upon learning his mother’s death, yet is now unveiling his pain for all to see. Although, the author only developed Seth’s expression of emotions, compassion and a slight change in his ideologies, but didn’t develop or change his violent tendencies and sharp tongue. This can be proven with this
