What if you were to one day wake up with an uneasy feeling that your not used to. This feeling could go on for long periods of time until you finally go to the doctors to figure out what is wrong. Once your at the doctors you find out that the uneasy feeling you have been having is actually the result of being pregnant, getting sexually transmitted disease or any other issue caused by sexual activity. How would you react to the news of this happening to you? Did you know the risks of what could happen by having sex or did you just ignore the information that was given to you? I believe that all teenagers should be equipped with the proper knowledge to prevent these situations. Today there is a growing issue in todays society that can help be prevented by education in the schools. I believe that schools should require a general sex education class. I believe that with the proper knowledge there will be a chance to start decreasing the number of STD’s, unintended pregnancies, and provide information on healthy relationships. This can be a subject that is hard to teach because each persons views, religion and beliefs on what should be taught can be very different. If students were more informed before they get an STD, have an unintended pregnancy or get in an unhealthy relationship the likeliness of it happening could go down. Even though there may be a possibility of a religious issue with the class or parents do not want their students to be in it, students should have the opportunity to take the class and gain knowledge on the subject. This knowledge would also be helpful since around 63% of teenagers will have had sex by the time that they reach their senior year of high school. “MSN.com” (STD) also known as (STI) is defined as a sexually transmitted disease or sexually transmitted infection is contracted by any type of body fluid from one person to another. Today there are many different types of STD’s that can be contracted by people who may not have the proper knowledge to help protect themselves against them. According to the American sexual Health Association “more then one half of all people will have an STD/STI at some point in their lifetime.” Also according to the American Sexual Health Association “in 2008 there were an estimated 110 million prevalent STI’s among women and men in the US. Of these more than 20% (22.1 million) were among women and men age 15 to 24 years.” If these people were given the proper knowledge about STD’s or STI’s the percentage would more then likely be much less then it is. Some STD’s can be cured by antibiotics such as clymedia but some STD’s like Aids can not be cured and can become fatal very quickly. Even though there are antibiotics for clymedia people without the proper knowledge will not know how hard it can be on ones body. “In the U.S., more than 750,000 girls ages 15-19 become pregnant every year. Could this be prevented? This often occurring mishap may never be able to be completely eliminated from the United States, but there is one thing we can do. We can provide these girls and boys with the knowledge they need to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Not only do children and young adults need knowledge of how to prevent pregnancies at an early age; they also need to know much more. Sex is something that we can’t expect these kids to know about. It isn’t common knowledge that you just know. These children need to know that sex doesn’t just cause babies; sexual intercourse can cause not only that, but sexually transmitted diseases.
