Teen “Sexting”
Sexting – teens sending sexually explicit photos of themselves via cell phones, email, or instand message – has become the latest in a line of highly charged issues involving kids and the internet. Sexting has become a widespread occurance that has destroyed lives and has caused emotional distress to many teenagers and young adults. Sexting gives teenagers the feeling of acceptance and the chance to be popular by gaining attention but what they fail to realize is the attention they are receiving is negative and it affects their reputation. Once a sext message has been sent, the receiver is given the opportunity to show the message to his or her peers and which will bring negative attention to the sender. There are many consequences of sexting that many people don't think about when they are in the act of doing it. “For teens, the consequences of sexting are the same for adults in most states, but could also prevent students from receiving college scholarships, job offers, in addition to the embarrassment of having your nude photographs floating around the Internet.” (Hoyos, Brandon De). Many consequences can lead to jail time, including distribution of child pornography. Say, a seventeen year old male send an explicit message to an eighteen year old female and she shares that photo with someone over the age of eighteen, then she could be charged with distribution of child pornography. “Imagine being convicted of the crime of child pornography and serving five year’s probation. You are rejected by colleges, lose your friends, and have to move because your home is too close to a school. You’re unable to get a job, and you have to register as a sex offender until you are 43.” (B., Katie). There are many things that can happen to one that gets caught with distribution of child pornography and it is certain that no one wants to deal with these consequences therefore, sexting shouldn't take place.
