Shawn Johnson is hardworking, and when she sets her mind at something she makes it happen. When she was younger, children at school would make fun of her because she looked like a boy, and she had a boy’s name. She had to learn to ignore the bullies in the world, and be herself no matter what anyone else thinks.When she started gymnastics her coach told her that she was full of energy, but not full of talent. She takes the small things in life, and treasures them, and learns from them. She said, “As long as you've done your best, making mistakes doesn't matter. You and I are human; we will mess up. What counts is learning from your mistakes and getting back up when life has knocked you down.” In her book “Winning Balance,” at the end of every chapter she summarizes lesson she learned from what happened in her life. She is always focused on being a better person. She learned from gymnastics that you need to have a balanced life. If all she thought was important were gymnastics, she would not be nearly as good of a person. She acknowledges that family and school are important as well.
