Hours: 12.5 hours This week for my practicum I attended a seminar at LifeBridge Sinai Hospital and continued my clinical experience at Shepherd’s clinic. The name of the seminar I attended at Sinai was Developing Resilience through Compassionate Care: A Strategy That May Reduce Burnout presented by Dorrie Fontaine. Along with being a nurse that holds a Doctorate degree, she is the Dean and a Professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Throughout the presentation, Fontaine reviewed strategies that have been implemented at the University of Virginia, and how we can incorporate them in our daily work lives with the goal of avoiding burnout. During this time, I assisted in the office by completing administrative and clerical work. For example, when the clinic services new patients or receive lab work back in-house, this information needs to be hand-keyed into their system. New patient’s demographics were entered onto a spreadsheet and vital signs and lab work were also keyed into the medical record. Along with these duties, I continued to help clinically in the office. For example, I gathered patient’s information prior to seeing the doctor, obtained vital signs, completed EKG’s and performed phlebotomy. This week I had to opportunity to call patients to report results from tests performed earlier and called in prescriptions to patient’s pharmacies. This entire practicum experience was eye-opening because I had the opportunity to learn how a free clinic is organized and profitable. For example, the Director at the facility is responsible for obtaining grants, many of the medications and other items required for patient care is donated.
