Sherman Alexie's Involvement In Superman And Me

Throughout his passage “Superman and Me,” Sherman Alexie (1997) discusses his story regarding his involvement in self-taught reading. The story shows the readers that Alexie taught himself how to read through a Superman comic book (1997, pg.3). Alexie’s dad had a longing for books, and due to Alexie’s love for his dad, he too acquired this passion as well (1997, pg.4). Alexie teaching himself how to read helped him be more successful in life (1997, pg. 5). He wanted to share his knowledge with other people to help them out as well (1997, pg.6). I relate to Sherman Alexie’s growth of motivation from someone he loved to achieve his dream despite his environment; I grew up in a different environment of education than what I wanted to achieve. My mom was a stay-at-home mother to four children, while my dad was a man that created his own business of building basements with the knowledge he learned from his dad. I am the oldest of my siblings, so as of right now I am the only one who graduated high school. Growing up in public school, I have always had an interest in increasing my education to the next level, but my parents had no knowledge to help me achieve that. My parents had nothing against college but found different ways to navigate their career without the years of education needed; this made them not know much information about college, so they did not know how to help me.
