There she supported improved employment and education programs, expansion of day care, income support and other programs to improve inner city life and opportunities for jobs and education. She also helped the community by introducing more than 50 pieces of legislation and championed racial and gender equality, the plight of the poor, and ending the Vietnam War. When she served on the House Rules Committee as the second woman ever to serve, she was faced with sexism and racism, but she did not give up. Shirley kept pushing forward and tried to make sure people took her seriously. With her determination and strength, Shirley Chisholm was able to fight for rights and create change.
