Molly Pitcher was born on October 13, 1754 in New Jersey. Her real name was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley. She was raised by her father, John Georg Ludwig, who was a butcher in Philadelphia. Mary was hired at a young age to housekeep the Irvine household in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She lived with them for a period of time until she met her husband, William Hays, and married him in 1769. In 1777, when her husband enlisted in the army, she followed him which was usual for women to do in both the British army and American troops. Molly began assisting in her husband’s regiment and started curing the sick, helping cook meals and, helped wash clothing.
