The List
She lays snuggled up next to him, their legs intertwined. She can feel his heart beating rapidly in his chest, his breath quick and fast from their latest round of lovemaking. She hears the soothing sounds of rain gently tapping against their hotel window. A woman dulcet voice emanates from his computer’s speakers:
I’ve got the ways and means to New Orleans,
I’m going down by the river where it’s warm and green.
I’m gonna have a drink and walk around,
I’ve got a lot to think about,
Oh yeah…
She looks up at him, “Tell me about New Orleans again?”
He breathes deeply, inhaling her intoxicating scent, and pulls her closer, “New Orleans? I love the rain in New Orleans… just like a nice warm shower.”

“Laissez les bons temps rouler!” the attendant shouts, to the cheer of the crowded plane, pushing her mind to full consciousness. I guess I’m finally here, she thinks to herself, recalling the promise that started the journey. I told him I would never break my promises, not after... I just hope he remembers.
She picks up her purse and day bag, and makes her way off the plane. She immediately hears the *ding ding ding* of slot machines as she steps into the Las Vegas terminal. Overhead, she sees a sign:

Warm, humid September air washes over her as she steps outside. The thick, muddy smell of the Mississippi river hangs in the air. It’s raining hard, but not too hard.
