Think of how heavy 100 pennies would be to carry around compared to carrying a one dollar bill. Quoted by John Green, "If Abraham Lincoln were alive today, he would say: 'Why is my face on a coin that is worth 1/26 of what a penny was worth when I was President?’” (Green 1). This quote says a lot about how much the Penny coin is worth today and how much meaning it even has to Americans today. Repeatedly, pennies are left on the floor or just thrown away, but thousands of them are still made each year and wasted. By discarding the penny we do get rid of Abraham Lincoln and he will become a mere remembrance of who was on a penny. Today pennies are found on the ground face up as good luck or under couches. For example, “In the 1920’s a few pennies could buy you a handful of candy, a bottle of soda or a newspaper” (Should 1). Today there are no stores that price their merchandise at one cent, even Gumball machines, claw machines, and little toy machines are a quarter or more.
