Should Collegiate Athletes get Paid ?
Growing up as an Indian boy, sports were not valued in my family. Whether or not you were allowed to hang out with friends or buy your favorite toy depended on your grades. Without the grades, you couldn't have any fun. Fortunately for me, my grades were in top notch shape and I finally started exploring new things other than academics. Basketball was a sport that I happened to pick up. I was lucky enough to be able to watch my first NBA game in 1st grade and play for my first club team in 2nd grade. Ever since, I have breathed basketball. Once again, this was only possible as my grades were always great. Currently a student athlete at Stevenson High School, I am trying to play at the next level, college. On a weekly basis, I practice 12-15 hours of basketball. Unfortunately, many athletes prefer to leave college early and become pro so they can support their families financially. If the NCAA wants student-athletes to be defined as students first and athletes second, paying college athletes can help cancel out the huge amount of college expenses and actually stay in college for four years. According to the article “Should Student-Athletes Get Paid?,” “A university’s primary objective is to ensure its students an education that helps them succeed later in life.” But the greedy NCAA would much rather keep the money than helping college athletes, forcing them to pursue a professional career in sports after one or two years. In terms of money, it should be very simple for the universities to reduce the financial burden for their student-athletes as the money generated to the NCAA is
