There are some who will argue that Americans should not be “left in the dark” as to what our government is doing. Others will argue that when the U.S. conducts covert foreign policies they are showing both an obvious disregard for our own ideology and policies regarding democracy, and they are disregarding the right to self-determination that is guaranteed in the United Nations’ documents that the U.S. signed. While I can see these viewpoints as valid, I also know it is highly unlikely that we, the U.S. citizens, will ever really know everything that is going on around the world and all of the political details and dangers that involve the U.S. That is why I have to believe that our leaders that we voted for will have America’s best interests in mind behind every decision they make. …show more content…
Unfortunately, there are times when, for the good of our country, the president has to carry out an activity in a foreign region or state, but do so in a secret manner so to conceal the U.S. from being involved and identified as the responsible party. Our president might need to engage in a covert foreign policy for several reasons and in a variety of circumstances. For example, he may need to use the role of secrecy to in order to evade any negative international publicity and even domestic publicity. Or this kind of conduct may be needed to avoid direct confrontations with other countries/regions where the U.S. is intervening. Plus, covert foreign policy may be needed to protect the U.S. agents and agencies that have already infiltrated the target states of U.S. covert
