The Immigration Act of 1882 was an act to further limit immigration into America. This act created a tax of 50 cents on all immigrants who landed at US ports. There were also criteria that had to be met by the immigrants to gain entrance into America. The criteria set in place meant that a person could not be a convict, a lunatic, or a person unable to take care of themselves “without becoming a public charge”. If a person failed to meet the criteria, they were sent back. This is a topic that should still be taught in schools today; however, I am unsure how this act particularly affects students and teachers in today’s society.
