The dictionary definition of volunteering is, “A person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task.” But, if you were to ask why many students are setting up Christmas lights in the park or volunteering at the nursing home, most responses would consist of saying it was required or they are just doing it so they will be accepted into their dream school. That is not and shouldn’t be the purpose of volunteering. Yes, it may not be ideal to wake up at 5 a.m. and pick up trash along the highway, but to know you are helping your community and the earth we live on, should be enough of a reason. “We serve” perfectly encompasses not only what Lions Club members believe is their duty, but also how society should view volunteering.
