Standing in the musty wings of a stage in Hershey, Pennsylvania, or the rotunda of the JFK Memorial Museum or the exquisite balcony of Carnegie Hall, could never prepare me for the results from our NYSSMA majors performance. With sweaty palms and gut wrenching anxiety the manila folder was opened and the room went from a tense, terrified, excitable atmosphere to a room filled with exuberant energy and ecstatic students and teachers. In the moment, the most important thing to me was not the lustrous gold plaque, but whether our countless hours of drudgery were recognized. People strive to reach their maximum potential and that is what I found myself doing while being awarded a Gold With Distinction for overall performance for two consecutive years. Within the music department alone I am section leader of the basses, Co-Director of the audition only and student run Men’s Ensemble, which I was in since I was a freshman and director as well as choreographer of Show Choir. From these positions I've learned the importance of working cohesively with conductors and peers, and how intrinsic it is to work hard for the common goal of a successful performance. Executing a excellent, enticing performance is the greatest success in music.
